One blog that I'd really suggest that you view is linked here. This is Mr Lamshed's class in Australia. In Australia like New Zealand students are currently on their end of year Summer break.

In 2009 Mr Lamshed's class at Hackham East School is going to be a Boys Classroom with a lot of the work focussed on online work and cultural activites. They have already posted a number of videos and material and footage from the end of 2008 and you can tell its going to be an outstanding stite. Would strongly recommend that you check it out!

This is the final set of highlights from our end of year talent quest called "Tamaki Idol" that was held on the last day of school for 2008. This is footage of three students singing the song "Stronger". The featured students are Jasmiine from Room Six, Rochelle from Room Sixteen and Mikeala from Room Six. Tamaki Int - Cook Island Solo Dance

This is our second to last highlight from our 2008 Cultural Show - this dance is one of the solo items and its Latrell's performance from Calliope House. All of the four school houses had to have an individual dance act that represented the cutlures of the students at Tamaki Intermediate School. This is a traditional solo Cook Island dance. Latrell also performed a version of this on our schools trip to the Cook Islands in 2008. Tamaki Int. - Indian Girls Group Dance

As part of our Tamaki Intermediate Haka Waiata Festival 2008 our students had to perform five acts in total that represented some of the different cultures at Tamaki Intermediate School. This act is the Girls Indian Group from Calliope House (Red - hence the uniforms). The students were taught this traditional Indian Dance by one of the Calliope House Teachers who was Mrs Sigamoney. They practised themsevles leading up to the competition. Regular followers of this site may recognise some of the students in this act! Students in New Zealand have another two weeks of holidays before the end of our summer holidays with students back in early February in most places. This is the Calliope (Red) House's Boys performing a Haka at our School Cultural Festival. This Haka is called 'Ka Mate' and is the famous Haka that the New Zealand Rugby team 'the All Blacks' perform as a challenge to the other teams before every rugby international. It was filmed at the Tamaki Intermediate School Hall on Friday 5th December 2008.

Tamaki Int - Five thousands Visitors

Following our 4,000 visitor to this site in the first week of December we are currently celebrating our 5,000 visitor to this site today - meaning of course that we are now averaging 1,000 visitors a month. After long deliberation I have decided to close this site, but not actively post to it, from the end of January 2009. The reason is straightforward as a body of work that was created by students from May (effectively) to December 2008. Although the students involved have all moved on to High School (most of whom will be Y9 students at Tamaki College) and will be posting from that location. Myself (Mr Webb) personally as most of you know have left Tamaki Intermediate after six years, the school where this site was created. However as of February 2009 I will be running a blog from my new school, which I will put a link to from here as soon as its up and running. A reminder that students throughout New Zealand are currently on holidays are will return to school at the end of January 2009. Happy Holidays!

On the final day of school I grabbed the camera and a group of students who have been heavily involved in our 2008 Tamakitoday work - Sabrina, Moli, Zecillia, Sosaia, Gaifo, and Joshua wanted to say an impromptu goodbye to all the viewers and thank you all for the contribution that you have made to the success of this blog.

Now that we've just broken for the holiday we'd thought we'd take some time to review some of the highlights from tamakitoday and the 2008 Room Six class blog. This blog was started as part of our schools involvement in the EHSAS project (Extending High Standards Across Schools). Our school is part of the Tamaki Cluster of Schools in Auckland New Zealand. You can visit our offical cluster site by clicking here.

Our literacy cycle which is in the left hand side bar, is an example of some of the collaborative work that we've completed. Although the academic year in New Zealand starts in late Janurary we didn't post our first 2008 online work until mid March 2008 with our Virtual Tour of School Video... March saw the premier of our 'Learn to Speak Samoan' Series of Language lessons. These started as a vechile to get ESOL (English as a Second Language) students involved in our online work and have expanded into Learn to Speak Maori, Learn to Speak Tongan and Learn to Speak Fijian.

Our most popular video at this point was 'Learn to Speak Samoan Lesson Two'. This was featured on a Professional development site as an example of intergrating ICT in the Classroom, and this was our first recoginiton of our site. We were very excited by this first recoginition. We've also been featured on other sites such as this Massey Tech.

By May we were publishing 'full steam' as we were constantly brainstorming ideas relating our students culture and material that we could publish online. We were also very happy with the numbers of visitors that we were starting to have. By June we'd had 820 visitors to this site, which was just over three months into our existance. This is when we created our 'Best Rugby Girls Tackles' video which is now our number one viewed material... this has had our 3,000 views and continues to climb all the time...

By August the Rugby season may have finished but we were working hard at our Quest Production which we were able to post material of online. The Y8 students went to Camp on Camp Bentzon, Kawau Island. Although not everyone could attend the brilliant thing was by going with our cameras meant we could share the experience with those who couldnt make it.

September saw our Science Fair, the big AIMS Tournament Trip to Tauranga for our Girls Basketball team competing in the National Finals. Tamaktitoday saw our 2,000 visitor come through the door and our 8,000 view of our teachertube material (six months after our start!)
October saw our 2,500 visitor and Learn to Speak Samoan saw its 20th Episode...

October saw our Learn to Sasa/International Sasa work that involved Mister P Class in the UK, Grey Lynn Primary School and Mr C's Page in the USA. The final product was produced for the Cluster Film Festival which was an absolute highlight of the year.

We celebrated 4,000 visits as of December 1st - nine months after we have started. The massive cultural festival Haka Waiata took place, as we celebrated a major achievement with our 2008 Edublog nomination for best use of Video/Visual. We finished the year with our 2008 Tamaki Idol Talent Quest... as well as having our 4,800 visitor on December 20th. Its been an absolutely amazing 2008 and its not finished yet!

Tamak Int - Tamaki Idol 2008 R1 Band

On the last day of School for 2008 students of Tamaki Intermediate had their 2008 talent quest which is called 'Tamak Idol'. Students had to volunteer to perform an act with some degree of talent. The students in this group were the R1 Band students who performed "Aint No Mountain High Enough". The band includes Laura and Ma'ata who are the singers, Kuapquashe on gituar and Lem is the amazing drummer! The act went down really well on the day and was a great way for students of Tamaki Intermediate School to bid farewell to the year!

Calliope Karanga. This is Calliope House's Opening Karanga (Maori Welcome) for the 2008 Haka Waiata Competition. Tamaki Int- Samoan Sasa Cultural Festival

This is the Samoan Sasa from Achilles House (Yellow) in the 2008 Tamaki Intermediate School Haka/Waiata Festival. Each house had to have a mass item that included all members of the house participating. In the Sasa everyone has to follow the beat or commands of the leaders. The Sasa is being co-lead by John from Room Six who also won the award for best male at the cultural festival. A Sasa is basically a slap dance where students use their hands to create a beat. The students themselves created the Sasa for this competition and taught themselves with the teachers supervising. Filmed by Victor at Tamaki Intermediate School Hall on Friday 5th December 2008.

Yesterday Tamaki Intermediate School had our 2008 Prize Giving. During the Assembly we have all the major awards given for the year. Victor was on hand to record the event, and a full video of the event will be shown later. Congratulations to all the winners on the day.

Today we have a special event in that we have the 2008 Tamaki Idol Competition. Our talent quest is taking place in the School Hall from 11:00am today. A full schedule of the acts and footage of all acts will be online shortly.

Some Tamakitoday presenters received significant recognition at the School Prize Giving. Sosaia who presented Netball reports earlier in the Year was named as Netballer of the Year. The Rugby Cup for player of the year went to Meliame (who'se tackle was rated best from our 'Best 8 hits of the year video). Cecelia who was our Basketball correspondent won both the Classroom Prize and Involvement in Sport Cup. Moli won the Senior Teachers Trophy for Sportsmanship and Lasini won the Outstanding Achievement in Sports Award.

This is the final week of school for students at Tamaki Intermediate School. Monday we have our 2008 School Prize Giving. This is the single most important assembly of the year. Students will be awarded prizes ranging from School Dux (best academic student) to Sports person of the year. Overall House of the Year will also be awarded, Orpheus House being white hot favourites following their Haka/Waiata Competition win, Athletics win and dominating three out of the four terms of competition. This event will be filmed in detail and posted online as soon as possible after the actual event.

Tues is the final official day of school. Students will receive their 2008 year book - Te Rama magazine, and the 2008 Tamaki Idol Competition will take place. There are ten students acts and two teacher acts competing for the 2008 title.

All of the acts will be filmed in full and posted over the christmas break... for those of you unaware students in New Zealand will be on Christmas break from next week until the first week in February (although there is some slight variation in this depending on the school). All our regular video contributors and busy filming their final releases in each series (Learn to Speak Samoan is up to lesson 25 for instance!) these in some cases will include Christmas and holidays special that will posted over the holidays.

Just as school finishes on Tuesday, and this week also marks the last official week of tamakitoday.blogspot.com.

We only started regularly blogging in March and since then the students are absolutely thrilled with the responses and what we've been able to achieve. We've had nearly 4,500 visitors to this site! We've had well over 20,000 views of our material online and we're in the top ten worldwide for numerous google searches. We've had so many highlights this year, being nominated for an Edublog Award, the Tamaki Film Festival, networking with wonderful people like Mister C's Classroom, Mister P, Mrs She's class at Point England School and Toa's Troops in China... the list goes on and on.

To each and everyone one of you thank you your support has meant so much to the students in Room Six of Tamaki Intermediate School.

This also marks the end of my (Mr Webb's) time at Tamaki Intermediate as after work here for just over six years I have decided to move cities and leave Auckland for Hamilton. We will continue to post throughout the holidays as we have a stack load of material to go through but the students themselves who have been the heart and soul of this online project will obviously be unable to reply to any posts that you make.

With the Christmas Season upon us its time to celebrate - its Learn to Speak Samoan Lesson 25 with a 'festive' flavor.

This lesson is focused on phrases associated with Christmas, family and celebration. The lesson is presented by Sideanna (Reindeer Antlers) and Gaifo (Santa Hat). The words will appear on screen in England and Samoan and will be spoken by the students in Samoan and then repeated in English. This lesson was filmed at Tamaki Intermediate School on Wednesday 10th December 2008. And features one of the worst 'Christmas Cracker' jokes - ever!

This video is the first in our series of winners of the 2008 Haka/Waiata Festival. Each of the four houses at Tamaki Intermediate School had to have a 'Mixed' item in the contest that involved up to ten students of Mixed Gender. The winners of this part of the competition were Calliope House (Red) with their Cook Island Dance Group. Many of you saw the rehearsal performance of this earlier in the week, although you can see the students adapted the final version, and the costumes have required a lot of work. A detailed description of this dance is being prepared by the students and will be posted in two days. As with the rest of the highlights from this festival they were filmed by Victor in the Tamaki Intermediate School Hall on Friday 5th December 2008.

This week at Tamaki Intermediate School. Monday students have their transition to Tamaki College in preparation for them becoming Y9. Tuesday - our Y8 students have their graduation. We will be spending all day at our end of Year activity and then in the evening we have our official graduation ceremony, in the School Hall from 6pm onwards. Wednesday its the turn of Room 14 and 15 to travel to Tamaki College. Friday we have our 2008 certificate assembly. This is the awards ceremony that recognises our work that students have carried out this year.

Tamaki Int - Haka Waiata 2008 Results

Phew! What a day, Friday saw the 2008 Tamaki Intermediate School Cultural Festival- Haka/Waiata. No more dress rehearsals or preparation, all the students in full costume for the event! The competition between Tamaki Intermediates four houses Leander (Green), Calliope (Red), Orpheus (Blue) and Achilles (Yellow) was the closet that its ever been!

Orpheus won best Girls Group, Boys Group and Girls Leadership. Achilles won best Boys Leadership and best Girls Item. Calliope won best Mixed Group Item and Leander won best Mass Item.

In the end it came down to the closet of margins with Orpheus coming first and winning, Achilles taking the runners up spot and taking second and Calliope third and Leander 4th.

Tamakitoday was there in force and we recorded every moment of it from the introductions to the judges decisions... 20 acts in full that will be released here over the course of the next month or so. We'll be starting with the winning items of each of the catergories and include all the dances, haka's, waiata and items in the following weeks.

Over the last week we've allowed you to follow the progress of the Boys Maori Haka (challenge/war dance) from Leander House. Yesterday on Thursday 4th December we had our final dress rehearsal for the big Cultural Festival (which takes place later today). The show was performed for some of our local primary schools as the crowd, some of whose students will be at this school next year. This is still a work in progress. This is Orpheus House. Orpheus house students wear 'blue' uniforms. This is the rehearsal for our Cultural Festival held at Tamaki Intermediate on Wednesday 3rd December. The full show was a 15 minute presentation that included five separate cultures of students at Tamaki Intermediate School. A full description of this will be updated by students tomorrow. This is Leander House. Leander house is the the 'green' house at our school. This is the house whose students won the 2007 cultural festival. The students had 15 minutes to perform five separate acts that reflect the culture of the students at Tamaki Intermediate School. This house for instance chose to have a Indian opening dance, a Samoan Solo dance (Gaifo from the Learn to Speak Samoan videos no less!), a Cook Island Mixed Group, a Maori Boys Haka (War Dance/Challenge) and finished with a mass item involving all studnets which was a Tongan item. Performed by the students at Tamaki Intermediate in our School Hall on Wednesday 3rd December 2008. This is the first dress rehearsal. Filmed by Evandah and Sosaia.

These are the highlights from Achilles House. Achilles house is the Yellow house at our school. The rehearsal is the first chance for our students to show their cultural act. Each house had to have five separate acts as a whole for their cultural performance, that had to reflect the culture of the students at our school. Today we had our first part of the 2008 Haka/Waiata Festival. Today's performance, the first of three was an opportunity for our students to see the other three houses at school perform. Students are in a house of four (Achilles - Yellow, Orpheus - Blue, Calliope - Red and Leander - Green). Over the next three days there are the big performances, culminating on Friday. This is the highlights of the Wednesday dress rehearsal.

This week we are very excited as we've just reached another milestone - our four thousandth visitor will arrive this week (probably on Tuesday). The site has only been operational since March and since then we've been on a steep learning curve! It's been gaining ground in recent weeks, thanks all so much for your support and help - it has meant the world to the students of Room Six. We've also acheived a few other notable milestones - our teachertube material view have gone past 12,500 and our youtube view past 4,000. All that added up means we've met our 20,000 view target in eight months!

Inadvertently we've also managed to create some other 'marks' as well. If you google Learn to Speak Samoan or Learn to Speak Tongan were in the top ten hits for this worldwide (two seperate entries for both!) We've achieved the same feat in a number of other area - Sasa Lessons, Learning to Speak Fijian and we're also #2 in the world for Girls Rugby Tackles! Well done Room Six!

It goes without saying that students are very excited about the big cultural festival that is taking place this Friday. In our continuing series of highlights leading up to the big event this is the work in progress that is the Achilles Boys Haka. Achilles House were the runners up in last years competition and will be looking for their boys to lead them again this year. Each house has five acts that make up their entire performance that need to cover all of the cultures of the school and Maori culture is compulsory. We've already posted a varitey of Maori Haka's online and this is another example. Calliope who are the fourth house are the only house that are performing 'Ka Mate' which is the traditional All Black Haka and the one that people seem to be most aware of. 2008 HAKA/WAIATA HOUSE COMPETITION

As you know if you are regular visitor to this site students are divided up into one of four houses for competition - Orpheus (Blue), Leander (Green), Achilles (Yellow) and Calliope (Red). The students compete in a cultural competition at the end of each year. Each house has to perform five acts that represent the cultures of students of our school. The competition has been building with two houses dominating the past few years of competition with Orpheus winning in 2004 and 2006 and Leander winning in 2005 and 2007. Competition will be fierce as the students are incredibly proud of the competition. The schedule for the competition is as follows:

Wednesday 3rd December - Dress Rehearsal 1:30pm in the Hall.
Thursday 4th December - Contributing Schools Performance

These are the final two rehearsals for the Houses and their students this is followed by the final show which takes place on

Friday 5th December in our School Hall at 11:30am.

Tamaki Int - Girls League Tag Finals

On Wednesday 26th November 2008 the Girls League Tag team travelled to Cornwall Park to compete in the Interzone Girls Tag Finals - which consisted of the top eight Auckland Girls League Tag teams. Our first game was against Glen Eden Intermediate, it was a close game but we were very happy to win 4-3. Our second game was against Kedgley Intermediate. It was a hard game and we lost 2-7. Our last pool game was against Northcross Intermediate. It was a very close game as we were leading 3-1 with not long remaining. They scored twice near the end to draw the game 3-3 which just edged us out of the semi-finals. We did enough to qualify for the plate finals and had to play Weymouth Intermediate. We didn't put our best effort in to the last game for the season and we lost 2-6. The Girls were very proud to be the only East Auckland Qualifiers for the Finals, and came 6th in all of Auckland. We had an awesome show at school on Monday when Dylan came and drummed. The students loved the performance and these are the highlights - filmed by Victor and John and edited by Victor.

Yesterday we had a drumming show in the Hall. The show was on Monday 24th November. Dylan is 18 years old. He started drumming when he was six! The show was amazing and cool. This is a example of a Maori Boys Haka. This is one of the cultural items from our Haka Waiata festival which is taking place next week. This is Leander (the green house) and their Boys leading the Haka is Wiremu.

This haka is from the Tainui tribe in the Waikato region.

There are many haka's in New Zealand. Each tribe has their own.
Some are challenges to other people, whereas some describe inequalities and
concerns over issues in the world.

This week at Tamaki Intermediate School... next week we have our huge cultural festival so the students in the four houses are practising for the event every day this week just before lunch as well as after school practises and work. We also in addition to this have:
Monday - a drumming display in the Hall. Students have to bring a two dollar donation to witness this show. Wednesday - our School Athletics team travels to Ericisson Stadium to compete in the 2008 Eastern Zone Finals. The same day our Girls League Tag team have the Auckland Champion of Champions Finals at ARL HQ in Cornwall Park. This will be the last organised sport for our school for this year. Lastly our big announcement this week we start our Tamaki Idol 2008 Auditions. We are going to be filiming all the auditions and these will go online as 'live as possible' so that you can follow the entire process from start to finish! The juding the tears!, the talent... all will be posted here live on Tamakitoday! This will culminate in our big final talent show on the last day of School which will be recorded and posted in full.

This is now week seven of 2008 and school and all related activities will close in late December and not start again until February. We have just recored our 12,000 teachertube view and this in addition to our traffic at this blog and youtube views means that this site is well on track to reach the magic 20,000 figure before the end of the year.

Tamaki Intermediate - Week Six Preview

This week at Tamaki Intermediate School.
Starting Monday: Our Cook Island Group (if you don't know as we've mentioned this site is now top ten in the world for google searches related to it!) have a big performance this week at the Telstra Clear Center in Manukau City. At the same performance the APOPs group and the Choir will be also performing. This is a major undertaking for all of our school groups who start extensive rehearsals today and not only will we be filming the event we have special new video series related directly to this show! Stay tuned for exclusive footage of this amazing event!
Tuesday - Our Athletics team which are competing in the Eastern Zone Finals at Ericisson Stadium, the full team list will be released online here before anywhere else! Our Girls League tag team will also be hard in training for the Auckland Finals, which they managed by claiming the Runners Up spot at last weeks Central/Eastern Competition.

The Haka Waiata House Competition is only three short weeks away and all students are preparing for this compeditive cultural festival. In addition this week the first auditions are taking place for Tamaki Idol 2008. Again with everthing this site will have full exclusive footage before anywhere else.

Also due this week are the last in the series of Learn to Speak Samoan, Learn to Speak Tongan and Learn to Speak Fijian (which were all in the top ten google searches for worldwide! amazing!). Finally we've also now reached not only 11,500 teacher tube view, our 2,500 youtube view but this site should receive its 3,500 visitor at some point this week! That means our students work and related material has been viewed by 17,500 individuals since we starting broadcasting in March. We're very excited and hoping to reach 20,000 visitors before the site closes at the end of the year!

For those of you who witnessed lesson one you will know that Gaifo is teaching Sideana to talk Samoan as Sideana has a Samoan parent but dosen't speak any Samoan. For Athletics at Tamaki Intermediate School students are categorised as Junior, Intermediate or Senior depending on their birthday at the1st of October. Students who are under 12 years and three months are Juniors, 12 years three months to twelve years and nine months are Intermediate and Seniors are those students who on the 1st October are aged 12.9 and over.

Long Jump our best Senior Girl was Katie who jumped 4.0 m. Curtis managed 4.3 m in the Senior Boys. Takawai won the Intermediate Boys with a leap of 4.2 m and this was bettered in the Junior Boys by his brother Patrick who leapt 4.5 m! Alison won the Junior Girls with 4.2 m.

Discus Senior Girl was won by Lesieli who threw 20.9 m. Vasini threw 25.9 m to win the Senior Boys, Ricky won the Intermediate Boys with a throw of 22.5 m, and the Intermediate Girls was won by Moli (yes, that Moli) with 19.4 m! Kathy won the Junior Girls Discus by throwing 20.7 m. However all these results were bettered by Samisoni in the Junior Boys who threw an impressive 28.0 m.

Tamaki Int. - League Tag Results

Today Tamaki Intermediate participated in the 2008 Eastern/Central League Tag Finals. Our Boys team managed a win against Kowhai Intermediate. They unfortunately found the going a little difficult from there on, and remained win less for the remainder of the competition. The Girls team started off by defeated Waiheke Island 5-0 and then defeated Farm Cove Intermediate 4-3 in a very close game. Our next pool game saw us taking on the form Girls School of 2008 Bucklands Beach Intermeidate (the defending 2007 Champions) who have dominated most competitions this year. The Girls were very nervous before this game, however Tamaki Intermeidate were able to score a considerable upset winning 4-0. Our last pool game was against Wesley Intermediate and a tense game ended in a 3-3 draw. There was a three way tie on points to determine the semi-finals ceedings and Tamaki Intermediate took top spot on goal difference. That put us in the Semi-Finals against Kowhai Intermediate. It was a game of two halves as in the first Cecelia (Tamaki's Captain and former Tamakitoday Basketball Correspondent) managed a hat trick of two point tries, Kowhai did score three times in the second half but all three tries were only single point efforts meaning Tamaki won 6-3. That put the Girls into the final where they took on the undefeated Royal Oak Intermediate. Royal Oak were able to claim a 4-0 win but Tamaki managed to qualify for the Interzone League Finals due to them claiming the runners up spot!

Thanks so much to all of you who post regularly on this site or leave comments for our students. If there's one thing that we could ask its that if you please leave a comment and a contact address that we can get back to you on! Tamaki Int - School Athletics

This week at Tamaki Intermediate School...
Monday - we have School Athletics. This was originally scheduled to take place on Friday but was postponed due to the weather. Our School Athletics day consists of students in their four competitive houses trying to win points for the Athletics Shield. Students are categorised as either Junior, Intermediate or Senior depending on their age at 1st October [Junior Under 12, Intermediate between 12 to 12.9 and Senior 12.9 and over] all students compete in 100m, 200m Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump, Discus, Hurdles and [Plastic] Javelin. This event will be split into two seperate days starting with Monday and concluding this Friday.
There's no need to ask of course Tamakitoday will be fully there recording and releasing the results and whats more were also putting online our best times, score, heights, throws for you to compare yourselves against.

Wednesday - Our School sports teams have the final team event for 2008 when we compete in the Auckland Rugby League Eastern/Central League Tag tournament. There are a number of students turning out for the school for the final time. Both teams have four pool games against the likes of Kowhai Intermediate, Farm Cove Intermediate, Waiheke Island School and Wesley Intermediate. This will take place at Cornwall Park in Auckland. Footage will posted following the tournament.

Thursday - Our ESHAS Cluster have their big day at Tamaki College. During the day all of the local schools will be coming in for our viewing hour to see the work from Tamaki College, Tamaki Primary, St Pius X School, Glenbrae, Panmure Bridge, Point England and of course Tamaki Intermediate School. Each of the schools are coming for an hour to see our work and our movies, followed by all the teachers later and then in the evening its the parents chance to come and see our work! During the day Tamaki Intermediate presenters will be there! As part of our presentation we will be releasing our movie contribution to the show online here. We will be putting the movie online live from 10:30am on Thursday for you all to view. This is the culmination of the 'International Sasa' that we are so greatful that some of you have contributed to!

Friday - Athletics, the second day of our school Athletics competition. This will allow us to select our School Athletics team for the Eastern Zone Competition at Ericisson Stadium later this month.

Sidenna one of the students in Room Six has a Samoan parent but she's not sure about speaking Samoan... and is keen to learn, but who to teach her?!!??! but of course we have just the expert required for Make Me a Samoan as Gaifo will be working with Sidenna over the next few weeks to teacher her Samoan language.

At Tamaki Intermediate we are very excited to round off the term with lots of more teachers involved in blogging. Most of you will know that the Y7 students have their own blog site called tamakitales! The slider above is some work that Miss Walley has been doing with her classroom. It was a nice touch that they were helped with their presentations by Sabrina, Moli and Victor who were sharing the skills that they've developed this year.

Not only that but now Room 15 have started blogging as well. Hopefully they can generate the sort of buzz created by blogs like Grey Lynn Primary School and Tanielu's blog from Point England School. Its fantastic to have these other sites producing work. Tomorrow we have a big event the School Athletics (Day 1). Weather permitting. One of the things that we will be doing this year is posting the best results online! We'll put down for instance the best throws in Shotput so you can compare yourselves to Tamaki Intermediate School! Of course we'll be taking footage both still digital images of the day and recording video footage for this blog! Stay tuned!

Tamaki Int. - Whaikorero Speech Contest

On the 5th of November at Tamaki Intermediate school there was the Y8 Whaikorero competition. Whaikorero means Maori Speech. All of the speeches had to have a proverb, and introduction in Maori and a Waiata (Song) to close. These are some selected highlights from this competition. Mikaela from Room Six was a representative and she wrote the following description about the experience.

My name is Mikaela I am Maori I competed in the whaiakorero speeches. There was six people who competed I think we all did really well. The Maori speech had to include a Whakatauki and an introduction on a speech. The Maori speech all up had to be three minutes long. It had to be followed by a Waiata. My song was:

Ma wai ra
E tau rima
te marae e waho nei
ma te tika
ma te pono
me te aroha e.

A few of the other songs that other contestants sang were NZ National Anthem, Te Aroha and He Honore .

Tamaki Int. - EHSAS 30 Seconds Advert!

Today in class our students were given 30 minutes to follow the literacy process and produce a 30 second advertisement to publicise the big ESHAS Cluster event next Thursday at Tamaki College. ESHAS (Extending High Standards Across Schools) is our cluster of Eight Schools which make up the Manaiakalani Cluster who are producing a movie night. Tickets are by gold coin donation and you can purchase a ticket from the local schools. Throughout the day of the 13th of November all of the local schools students are visiting the college to see our students work. This task was for students to brainstorm a 30 second advertisment for the show next week to publicise it. Students had seven minutes to brainstorm and plan, seven minutes to rehearse and then a five minute filming schedule. Start time in class 2:30pm. Fully finished by 2:52pm. Completed in twenty two minutes! Sorted! Filmed at School on Tuesday 4th November.

These are the highlights from the APOPs extension music group show at the Auckland Town Hall on Friday 31st October 2008. Sosaia will write a full report up to go with this video. Filmed by Evandah and Vincent.

On the 29th of October the APOPs people got a really great opportunity.We got to go to the Edge in the town hall in Auckland city. what we got to do was is on Wednesday the 29th we got to rehearse with the Philorama Orchestra and on the 30th of October we got to peform with them infront of lots of schools.The APOPs people got a dressing room with lights around them just like the movies I think what we got to do was a really good opportunity to sing with profesionals. Apops is a group of people who have extended in instruments.

Tamaki Intermediate - Leander House Sasa

As you know all Tamaki Intermediate School students are divided up into four different houses for competition. The Haka Waiata Festival is the massive cultural festival that all students and the four houses compete in at the end of each year. This is top secret footage of the 2007 Haka Waiata House Winners Leander house practising thier Sasa for the mass group item. There are five preformances that each House must have for judging and the competition is only four weeks away! Can Leander win a third title in four years? Could Achilles improve on last years runners up position, and what of Calliope and Orpheus? Stay tuned...

This week at Tamaki Intermediate School. Tuesday our Y7 students have this years Maori Speech Finals - the Waikorero competition in the hall. Wednesday our Y8 have the same competition. Choir is practising all this week for their big performances that are upcoming. Friday we have out Athletics Day for 2008 - the first half. Not only will we be recording the event here at Tamakitoday we'll also be recording selected times and distances (shot put, discus and high jump) so whereever you are you'll be able to compare yourself to the students of Tamaki Intermediate School.

Two weeks ago we celebrated our 2,500 visit, well things are progressing nicely here at Tamakitoday as we've just reached another milestone our 3,000 blog visit barely two weeks later. We're fast ending towards the end of the year. School in New Zealand has another six weeks to run before the end of the year as most schools finish around December 20th. We then break for Summer holidays and will return in February having roughly six weeks off.

Tamaki Intermediate - International Sasa Update

The students are very excited about the footage that is going to be received by those of you who are taking part in the Sasa that we've put together. We are looking at taking approx. 20-30 seconds of footage and through the magic of technology moulding it together to form one movie that we then show to our schools cluster meeting in two weeks time. The idea being that by sharing our cultures with other people around the world can learn something about our students here in Auckland, New Zealand and their culture. We abolutely have to have the submissions by next week so we can work them altogther so thank you so much for all of you that have said "yes".

We've posted the material here and on teachertube for those of you unable to view movies on blogger. There are details also on slideshare as well as written in text form here on the blog. The Sasa that we'd like you to attempt is the one labelled International Sasa 2 that was posted here on October 29th.

We had a couple if inquiries about the drum beat and an example of that so we also filmed an example of that from October 30th. Our students have mentioned traditional Samoan clothes or drums but of course for this example thats not necessary! Also feel more than free to adapt change, edit, and develop the Sasa to your own needs!

As is mentioned by Moli in the video we'd like you to incorperate a local flavour in the animals section by having an animal of local importance replace the animals that the students used for examples (and again there's no Tigers in Samoa for those of you who might be concerned about visiting!). Those of you who havent already left a brief comment with a contact email address please do so and we'll contact you about where to upload the file too.

Tamaki Int. - Sasa Drum Pattern

This is the drum pattern for our International Sasa that those of you who are contributing we'd like you to work off this beat for your part! This was drummed by Owen, Douglas, Viliami from Leander House at Tamaki Intermediate. The full set of moves will be available later tomorrow. In this example the Boys are drumming using two old oil tins, but you don't need to use tins anything that can be drummed will do! Remember to check out the slideshow for more tips!

This video Josh, Sabrina, Moli, Sosaia and Lucy go in-depth into the Sasa. We detail all the calls that you need for a Sasa, and translate them into English. The Sasa that is created by our students is repeated three times so you can practise and learn it! We also explain some of the calls and have the creation of animals for the Sasa for the enjoyment of those watching. (although we apologise in advance for the efforts of some students and no to answer this question now there are no tigers in Samoa!). Usually today I'd be posting the highlights of the week coming up. However in New Zealand today is a public holiday - its Labour Day, celebrating the 40 hour working week. (Whatever that is most teachers would not know I don't think!) I was going to do a post to explain it for our overseas visitors and then I read the perfect explanation on one of my favourite New Zealand Primary School Blogs - Wanaka Primary School (in the South Island close-ish to Queenstown for those of you who know your New Zealand Geography). If you thought that this blog was active you want to check out the amount of work that they do. Also I know that we're very please to be hitting 3,000 visitors shortly - they've clocked in nearl 11,000!

Tamaki Int - APPA Choir Highlights 2

The APPA Choir Group, which Tamaki Intermediate School is part of are preparing this term for their big performance at the Auckland Town Hall. This year Tamaki Intermediate will also having a cultural group perform as part of the show. Choirs from a number of schools have been busy preparing for this special event. Miss Dekker travelled with the Choir to Remuera Intermediate for a mid week practise. This highlights shows the performance of the 'Bear Necessities' from the Jungle Book and a classic New Zealand favourite song - Haere Mai. Theres a link to this song on NZ Waiata which has the full song and the notation. You can find that by clicking here. These highlights were filmed by Sosaia and Miss Dekker at Tamaki Intermediate School. Tamaki Int. - Sasa Instructions 2

This is the first of our Sasa update from the new series for those of you interested in helping out with our international film festival entry coming up in the next few weeks. In this video we got through Sasa 101 a basic start to Sasa. Hosted by Moli and Gaifo the students go through all that you need to perform a sasa as well as some basic instructions.

You will need

a leader who will call the commands, someone who is confident with a loud voice
a drummer who can keep the beat
a plan of thier action

In this video there are some commands that you will need to learn for the leader to shout out and also the students who are performing the sasa to know so they can perform the appropirate actions at the right time. The commands are called in Samoan and are as follows:

Tolo nofo - which means put your head down
Sauni - get ready

You will see in the video the times when you need to call them. There are also some basic patterns that are clapped using hands as demonstrated by Gaifo, Moli and Josh that you can try and adjust as you need.
